Angel Witch was founded under the name of Lucifer by Kevin Heybourne in 1976 and initially comprised of guitarist and vocalist Kevin Heybourne, guitarist Rob Downing, bassist Kevin Riddles and drummer Dave Hogg. Their name was switched to Angel Witch in 1978. In 1979 Rob Downing left the band and the three piece “classic” line up of the band was solidified. In 1980, Bronze Records picked up the band and they soon proceeded to record and release their debut album, self-titled Angel Witch.
This album is considered one of the most notable from the NWOBHM, This album also had a notable influence on both the speed metal and doom metal genres, with everyone from Metallica & Exodus to Candlemass & Trouble citing it as a major influence. Subsequent to the album’s release, the band’s structure began to fall apart.. Dave Hogg left the band first and was replaced by Dave Dufort for the 7″ ‘Loser’ ep. Shortly after Kevin Riddles also departed to form the band Tytan and, despite Heybournes attempts to continue Angel Witch with other musicians, the end of the band was declared and he joined Deep Machine.
The band have split up and reformed many times over the years, with the line-up always revolving around founder and songwriter Heybourne. First reformed, very briefly, in 1982. The band started again in 1984. Kevin Heybourne attempted to relocate the band to America in the 90s with a completely new band as none of the existing members would relocate. Passport problems prevented Heybourne from staying in the United States and the band split up again.
In 2009 Angel Witch made a triumphant return to the world stage by playing the prestigious Roadburn Festival in Holland followed by a packed out show at The Underworld, London. High quality live recording and filming of the show proved a shrewd move as footage of the sell-out crowd screaming THAT chorus (in unison with the band) spread across the world. This performance is considered by many to be the ultimate rebirth of Angel Witch and a renewed respect for Kevin and his incredible NWOBHM legacy has rapidly been building since.
In the last 12 months the Band has toured with the likes of Candlemass & Trouble, played numerous festivals in Germany, the UK & Scandinavia, as well as headline dates in Greece & Japan. The ultimate cherry up top comes with recent news that guitarist Bill Steer (Carcass et al) has entered the fold as a full time member of Angel Witch plus a new album (recorded in classic NWOBHM style) is planned for release on the respected Rise Above label, spring of 2011.
